As winter’s chill settles on hills
And dawn rises again
We turn back to our old routines
Of course, we’re only men
We check things off our daily lists
We worry about the time
No time left to check in with God
“Tomorrow will be fine”
We walk past those who sleep on streets
With no place to call home
The rush of life pulls us along
For days they wait alone
This January morn brings bitter winds
Its night brings frosty air
An outstretched palm implores to me
His eyes say ‘don’t you care?’
The resolutions now begin
Eat well, read more, workout
But I can’t work out why I still have sins
I’d sooner live without
When a single sheep is led astray
From the flock Christ calls His own
The Lord leaves not a single one
And pursues us till we’re home
He holds us in our hour of need
He wipes away our tears
We lie, we steal, we cheat, have greed
Distracted by affairs
Am I to turn my face away
From the heart of Jesus Christ?
Did Christ not show a different way
When He paid the final price?
I see the silent tears roll down
Their damp and frozen cheeks
I pray that God remembers them
The lonely, poor and meek
His endless mercy never fails
Though we may fail in sin
May Spirit blow within our hearts,
A stirring gust of wind
I pray our faith may be renewed
For this year and for life
Let’s love our neighbours as ourselves;
Resolve to live for Christ
